The Founder

Professor Carlo Alberto Bartoletti (1933-2013) devoted all his live to Aesthetic Medicine. In 1975, he perceived the necessity of a branch of medicine dedicated to Life Quality and health considered as an expression of mental well-being, in a preventive and corrective sense.

Having had a total commitment and an insourmontable tenacity he gave impetus to this cultural and scientific movement by founding the Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine. Over the years, thanks to a series of qualifying and scientific operations, he received unconditional endorsement from Universities, Hospitals and Scientific Associations. Especially from the most famous and distinguished professionals in the fields of dermatology, plastic and aesthetic surgery, and also of geriatrics and internal medicine, gerontology and general medicine. They all came together in the scientific board of his dream that came true: the Scientific Journal of the Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine, that is still a benchmark for the entire discipline.

He was convinced that behind this new branch of medicine there should have been doctors with high qualifications and adequate competencies. He promoted several Congresses and Courses. Moreover, in 1990 he created – in cooperation with the Fatebenefratelli Foundation – the International School of Aesthetic Medicine, that is still the most important and complete training path of the discipline.

As a result of his tireless efforts and his dream of a social role for Aesthetic Medicine, in 1994 the first Ambulatory Service of Aesthetic Medicine was opened at the San Giovanni Calibita Hospital – Tiber Island in Rome, with the goal of making more accesible the fruition of this preventive and corrective medicine in a social way.

His charisma and his great human qualities, as well as his great scientific heritage, will remain unforgotten for all the people who met him.

Aesthetic Medicine was his life, and it has become the life of many others. In the life of these people there will be a bit of his life too.

Professor Carlo Alberto Bartoletti

He was born in Rome on April 4th, 1933
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Rome in 1958.
He specialised in Gastroenterology at the University of Rome in 1960.
He specialised in Cardiology at the University of Turin in 1962.
He specialised in Gerontology and Geriatrics at the University of Florence in 1977.
He took part in the foundation of the French Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SFME) in 1973.

He promoted the cultural movement of Aesthetic Medicine in Italy, as founder of the Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SIME) and its official body the journal “La Medicina Estetica” in 1975. Furthermore, he received unconditional endorsement from Universities and Hospitals for the scientific organisation in this discipline of three basic courses of Aesthetic Medicine, 34 national congresses, 2 international congresses and 1 world congress.

In 1976, Carlo Alberto Bartoletti (Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine), together with Jean-Jacques Legrand (French Society of Aesthetic Medicine), Michel Delune (Belgian Society of Aesthetic Medicine) and Joseph Font Riera (Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine), founded the Union Internationale de Médecine Esthétique (UIME) based in Paris. It aims to create the philosophy, the clinical and therapeutic aspects of this new discipline. At present there are 27 countries in the world where there is a scientific society of Aesthetic Medicine recognized by UIME.

In Italy he promoted mesotherapy as a medical method coinciding with the foundation of the Italian Society of Mesotherapy (1975). Spreading the knowledge of this method in the medical field, he gained cooperation with Universities and Hospitals, which have successfully used this therapy in their discipline.

In 1990 he promoted the International School of Aesthetic Medicine of the Fatebenefratelli Foundation for health and social research and education. This was the first school among the UIME countries to be founded, with a 4-year programme to train experts in this discipline, reserved for graduates in Medicine and Surgery.

He also promoted the opening of the Ambulatory Service of Aesthetic Medicine, for which he was the Scientific Director at the San Giovanni Calibita Hospital Fatebenefratelli – Tiber Island in Rome (1994-2008), for the practical internship of doctors enrolled in the school. It was the first experiment of the Ambulatory Service of Aesthetic Medicine in a hospital, which allowed a wider social stratum of the population to have treatments at “hospital” costs, and benefit from a preventive medicine referred to those who are not at ease with themselves, because of an imperfection. It is a medicine aimed at improving life quality. In fact, Aesthetic Medicine is a medical branch, with its preventive and corrective programmes; it deals with the construction or reconstruction of the psycho-physical equilibrium of the human being.
